The word icon by its origin comes from a Greek word with the meaning "image", "picture". But unlike paintings, the most important thing in the icons is not the image itself, but the reflection of the inner idea, the content. That is the icon - is a revelation of God expressed in lines and colors and represented in the visual images. That's why the attitude toward icons has always been most respectful. In the old days the red ("beautiful") corner - a place for icons - was settled in a place with a very good lightning. It was traditional for the families to especially carefully keep the cleanliness of the red corner and to decorate icons with frames, vestments, flowers. Sometimes holy pictures were decorated with embroidered towels.
The icons made of solid wood, are able of carrying and storing the same inner content, idea and meaning as the painted icons do.
